Google Maps Wildfire Tracking on the Web
The Google Maps website provides a wildfire tracking tool that you can use to see the location of wildfires in just a few steps. You can log into your Google account if you like, but it’s not required.
Select the Layers icon on the bottom left of the screen and choose More.
To view the Wildfires layer for an area, open the Layers window and select the Wildfires layer. To turn the layer off, toggle it off at the bottom of the screen. ..
The red and white flame icon indicates a reported wildfire. Choose any of these icons to see additional information:
The fire icon on the left side of the screen opens a panel that displays information about the fire, including when it was last updated, how much of the fire is contained, and how many acres have been burned. If a wildfire has been named, you’ll see this information as well.
You can close the panel using the X on the top right. Then, use the same actions you normally would to move about the map if you’d like to review other reported wildfires.
The Google feature that lets you learn about fire areas is a great way to find out more about the area around your house.
Turn Off Wildfire Tracking on the Web
Google Maps can be turned off if you have other business to attend to on the app, like setting up a custom route for a trip or locating a family member. ..
The toggle at the bottom of the map view allows you to disable the feature and return to the original map view. The box will disappear after a few moments.
To turn off the Wildfires layer:
- Open the Layer icon and select it.
- Disable the Wildfires layer.
Google Maps Wildfire Tracking in the Mobile App
If you’re using a mobile device, you can review the Google Maps wildfire tracking on the app. Open the Google Maps app on your phone or iPad to get started.
You can search for a location or use your current one. Then, tap the Layers icon on the top right below the search box on the main screen. Select the Wildfires layer to turn it on and tap the X to close the Layers window. To view wildfire information, tap the Layers icon on the top right below the search box on the main screen. Select Wildfires from the list and then tap X to close the Layers window. ..
The new fire information screen on the app allows you to see the latest update, percentage contained, and number of acres burned. ..
After you finish, swipe down to close the details about that fire and then select another to view its information if you wish.
You can use your fingers to zoom in or out on Google Maps by pinching inward or outward.
Exit Wildfire Tracking in the Mobile App
To track a wildfire, tap the arrow on the top left. This returns you to the main Google Maps screen and turns off the Wildfires layer simultaneously.
